I have to admit, Kaufman County is a great place to live, raise a family, and enjoy life. But if you are searching for a place for Mom or Dad to retire, and you run across a retirement facility named Hickory Square, (Kaufman, Texas), run like hell away, and as fast as you can ! NOTE: Hickory Square dropped its name at the start of 2018. They are now using "Rosehaven Retirement Residence". So don't be fooled, its still the same building, same staff, same history, same problems, and same shaddy operation.
My sister, who is our family "champion" in taking care of our retired mother, had mom at the Hickory Square retirement and assisted living apartments for awhile, and oh my God what we were exposed to and found out will blow your mind away !
This place is about as shady as they get. They want to show you a sweet side, being all professional, and acting like they care, but I AM WARNING YOU, THEY ARE NOT THAT WAY ! What really blew my mind was learning about the Manager, Laurie G. Harris. Mrs. Harris was a family doctor in Crandall, TX, (Kaufman County), until she was charged, arrested, and convicted for being what the District Attorney called a "Drug Dealer".

Mrs. Harris, (who's Doctor's license was revoked by the State) was CONVICTED on 4 counts of selling and providing fraudulent prescriptions of controlled substances, and was also charged with witness tampering. She is serving her probating and community service at this time, and now she is the Manager of Hickory Square.
Why you ask ? Her sister, Wendy Manning, (and husband) are the owners ! So it's true, "the bad apple won't fall far from the tree". Needless to say, my sister got mom out of there fast. The other residents are afraid to say anything due to fear of retaliation. She still keeps in touch with many of them (her friends) , and hears the ongoing stories.

-On 09/24/15 the Kaufman Police Department took 4 felony reports of Credit Card or Debit Card Abuse on the Elderly. Reports are that an unknown person(s) entered the center dressed as a worker, and went to several rooms attempting to gain entry. Once the suspect gained entry into one resident she told the resident that she needed to come with her to the front lobby. As the resident complied another suspect raided the residents room stealing cash and credit cards. Once completed the other suspect abandoned the resident in the lobby.
The resident tried to tell Hickory Square employees what happened, but the employees dismissed it as a "delusional resident". After several hours passed, the family members found out of the report, and determined that the crime had been committed, (obviously since the stolen credit cards were used during the time). Kaufman Police confirmed the crime, but Hickory Square did not relay any of this to its residents. (Kaufman Police Report 150009108)
State Investigation Report and Findings
On November 17, the State conducted an investigation to this incident and uncovered many problems at the facility that resulted in multiple violations and citations being issued, including Exploitation, Abuse, Neglect, and Compliance Reporting.
On December 16, the DADS Program Director, (Darla Dottin, RN, BSN) found the violations so serious that an immediate correction order had to be made by December 28, or the facility would have "immediate termination" of the facilities license. Her letter is attached to the 18 page violation report below.
Many disturbing findings included: "all 24 residents at risk for identity fraud, emotional distress, and financial loss."

I only wish our family would have had a heads up on what happens up there, and a little more about the staff management. That's why I posted this website. Be your own judge, do your research, and don't just jump into anything for your loved one without checking all the facts. We know of the anxiety in finding a nice place for our retired loved one's, and its easy to "want" to be done with this chore, and that's a normal feeling, and Hickory Square knows this, and will exploit this to their advantage! This is why my sister got our loved one out of there.
I hope this information helps you with your search, and good luck, but take your time researching, and think about it !
When reviewing their site be VERY CAUTIOUS of fake reviews! Especially if it's from myreputations.com, which is owned by reputation.com, a very well know scam site. READ ABOUT THEM.
